Essential Pain Management

The focus of this course is on the pharmacological management of pain. Pain assessment, management, and evaluation are foundational skills for nurses working in any practice setting.  EPM aims to equip nurses with a foundational knowledge base and skills around pain management, from a palliative care approach, that can be applied to your practice.

• Successful completion of EPM prepares learners to meet the palliative care competencies for Nurses as outlined in the Ontario Palliative Care Competency Framework and Canadian Interdisciplinary Palliative Care Competency Framework

EPM is designed to benefit and appeal to all classes of nurses who care for adults living with life-threatening or life-limiting illnesses. It allows you set your own learning pace as you enhance foundational knowledge, interact with evidence-informed tools and resources to complete case-based activities, and engage in one or more coaching sessions designed to be responsive to your individual pain-related learning needs.

• Complete all the online modules for Part 1 (EPM) and achieve 100% on each module quiz
• Attend the scheduled Part 1 (EPM) coaching session (3 hours)
• Complete the online module for Part 2 (AMP) and achieve 100% on the module quiz
• Attend the scheduled Part 2 (AMP) coaching session (3 hours)

• Part 1 Modules: Getting started, Laying the Foundation, Understanding Pain, Assessment, and Approaches to Pain Management
• Part 2 Module: AMP Preparatory Module (a more in-depth look at equianalgesia and additional application of pain management principles to specific skills and scenarios)
• Coaching Sessions: both sessions will provide case-based learning opportunities to apply knowledge and skills to practice.

• non-refundable once Brightspace platform has been accessed

Technology Requirements: Access to the internet to complete the online learning modules on D2L’s Brightspace learning platform along with access to the Zoom platform and an operational microphone and camera for participating in the coaching session(s).

Full Participation is mandatory to receive a certificate.
